Our four week Beginners Series is designed to give you the time and space to properly learn the foundations of Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates or Yoga. Whether you’re completely new or have tried a few classes and still feel a little unsure, each course will take things back to basics and build gradually week by week.
You’ll practise with the same teacher and group throughout, giving you the chance to ask questions, understand the key movements and terminology, and build confidence before moving into our regular open-level classes.
What to Expect
-
Over the four weeks, you’ll get very familiar with the Reformer machine and how to use it confidently and safely. We’ll cover how the machine works, including springs, straps, the carriage and footbar, as well as how to set yourself up and move between exercises. You’ll learn the foundational movements you’re most likely to come across in an open-level Reformer class, including footwork, core work and exercises for the upper and lower body. Along the way, we’ll look at breathing, alignment, control, transitions and how exercises can be adjusted to work for your body. By the end of the four weeks, you will feel more comfortable getting onto a machine + joining one of our regular classes.
-
The Mat Pilates series will introduce you to the foundations of Pilates and help you understand what you’re actually trying to do in each movement, rather than simply following along. Across the four weeks, you’ll learn how to connect to your core, work with your breath and find good alignment and control. We’ll break down the key exercises and positions you’ll regularly see in class, while gradually building strength, mobility and body awareness. You’ll also learn modifications and different ways of approaching exercises, so you can begin to understand what works best for your own body and feel confident moving into an open-level class.
-
Designed for anyone who wants to start practicing yoga without feeling like they’re expected to already know what everything means. Across the four weeks, we’ll break down the poses and transitions you’re most likely to come across in class, including things like downward facing dog, warrior poses, sun salutations and how to move between them. We’ll also look at breathing, basic alignment, how to use props, and different options you can take within poses depending on your body. There’s no expectation that you’ll already be flexible or strong. The idea is to give you an understanding of the fundamentals, so when you join an open-level class you know what the teacher is talking about and can practise with more confidence.
